How to Control Apple Music Using Apple Watch

Aside from showing you the time, notifying you of your texts and calls, and measuring your heart rate, what else can your Apple Watch do? Control your music, that’s what! You can use your Apple Watch to control your music on your Mac, whether that’s playing, pausing, or skipping a song.

It’s not automatic, of course. You’ll have to set it up properly first before you can enjoy this feature. It can be an Apple Watch from any series as long as it has the Remote app in it. Both your Mac and your Apple Watch should be on the same Wi-Fi network for it to work. It would be best if both devices are also updated to the latest version of the OS.

The first thing you need to do is to connect your Apple Watch to your Mac. Just follow these steps:

  1. Open the Music app on your Mac.
  2. Open the Remote app on your Apple Watch.
  3. Scroll down your Apple Watch display and tap on Add Device. A four-digit code will appear on the screen.
  4. Check to see that the Music app on your Mac will prompt you to enter the code.
  5. Input the code and press Enter. Your Apple Watch and your Mac should now be connected.

Now that both devices are connected, you can use the Remote app to control Apple Music using your Apple Watch. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the Music app on your Mac.
  2. Open the Remote app on your Apple Watch.
  3. Scroll down your Apple Watch display until you find your name. Tap on Library.
  4. From there, you can see the Play icon. Tap on it to start playing music.

You’ll be able to see other controls in this panel as well such as the Back and Next buttons on either side of the Play icon. Once the music starts playing, the Play icon will turn into a Pause icon, which you can tap if you want to pause playing music. Use the Digital Crown of your Apple Watch to adjust the music volume.

You can also add a music library by doing the following:

  1. Open the Remote app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Scroll down your Apple Watch display and tap on Add Device. With the Music app also open on your Mac, select your Apple Watch device from the device list that you can see in your library. For iTunes users, just click the Remote button located close to the top left portion of your iTunes window.
  3. Input the four-digit code shown on your Apple Watch screen.

If you have more than one library connected, you can choose which one you want to play by tapping the library displayed on your Remote App. On the other hand, if you wish to remove a media library, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Remote app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Look for the device or library that you wish to remove. Tap and hold this selection until it jiggles.
  3. Tap on X and your Apple Watch will prompt you to confirm this removal.
  4. Tap on Remove and this media library will be permanently removed from your Remote app.
