Earlier this week Apple released an update to the AppleTV kicking the software up to version 2.3. This new update has some highly requested features added to the device, showing us that while Apple may consider it a “hobby” at the moment, they haven’t forgotten about our little tv media boxes.
Updated Features include:
Airtunes Streaming from AppleTV – You can now stream your music via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other AppleTVs in your house.
Third-party Remote Controls – Apple has finally added the highly requested feature for the AppleTV to now learn 3rd party remote controls.
Playlists – Another often requested feature – the AppleTV will now recognize playlists for music, video, podcasts, and music videos
Music Volume Control – Support for volume control in Music.
These all make great additions to the AppleTV, and make the device an even better buy. You can get your update in the Setting menu on the device if you don’t have it already.

It’s a pitty it slows the Apple TV down, there are no reboots, but search is still useless.
I like the new playlist feature. It lets me create long lists of all the short (4 to 5 min) shows and podcasts that my son likes. I am also finding it to be a bit quicker than before.
