There is no question that our iPhones have become an important part of our daily lives. In fact, we seldom go anywhere without them these days, and if we do accidentally leave them at home it generally leaves us feeling disconnected and out of touch. Carrying our phones with us when we go to work, run errands, and meet up with friends is a no brainer, and they are just as indispensable when we travel too. In fact, my iPhone pretty much goes with me everywhere, and since I happen to be a freelance travel writer, that means it has accompanied me on some fairly crazy adventures over the years. With that in mind, I thought I’d share a few places I’ve taken my iPhone, and would love to hear about where you’ve taken yours too.
There are a lot of reasons why the iPhone is the perfect travel companion. Not only does it allow us to stay in touch with friends and family back home, it gives us the ability to share photos, videos, and other updates from our adventures too. It can also provide information about the best places to eat, drink, and stay, while also helping us to navigate through a foreign city with aplomb. Additionally, it is a great source of entertainment on long flights, providing music, movies, games, books, and more. In short, Apple’s little device is the perfect tool to have with us no matter where we go, thanks in no small part due to its exceptional level of versatility.
As mentioned, I’m fortunate enough to get to travel regularly for my job, and I’ve been to some pretty amazing places along the way. Over the years, my iPhone has accompanied me on many of those journeys, allowing me to take notes on where I’ve been, and what I’ve seen, while also serving as solid point and shoot camera as well. For instance, back in 2009 my iPhone 3GS traveled up the Amazon River with me in Peru. The durable little device survived high humidity and heavy rainstorms to snap photos and belt out some tunes as I sat on the deck of an old riverboat that slowly navigated its way upstream. At the time, the iPhone hadn’t become quite so ubiquitous overseas just yet, and other passengers looked on with curiosity.
In the years that followed, the various versions of the iPhone that I have own have continued to accompany on many journeys. It has tagged along as I hiked to Everest Base Camp, joined me as I snowshoed through Yellowstone National Park during the dead of winter, and climbed active volcanoes in northern Chile. It has gone on Safari in South Africa, sailed around the Caribbean, and trekked deep into the Outback of Australia, amongst numerous other places. On all of those excursions it has been an essential piece of travel gear, providing endless functionality and entertainment in a tiny form factor that you hardly even know you’re carrying with you most of the time.
Earlier this year I may have actually taken my iPhone to the craziest place ever. In February I climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, and my iPhone 6 came along for the hike. Apple’s wonderful little device even proved itself useful at 5895 meters (19,341 ft), as I used it to snap photos of the summit on that memorable day. Even in cold weather, and at high altitude, the smartphone functioned perfectly, and reminded me once again just how useful it is on any trip.
As I write this, I’m preparing to head off to Egypt for another assignment. I have been there before, but I’m looking forward to going back for another visit. This time I know that the iPhone will be with me as I visit the Great Pyramids and Sphinx, camp in the Sahara Desert, and sail down the Nile River. At this point the smartphone has proven its worth on far too many past excursions, and I know no matter where I travel in the future, my trusty iPhone will come along too.
