Is Your iPhone Randomly Restarting?

Table of Contents

There are a growing number of reports emerging at various outlets across that Internet that indicate that many iOS users have begun experiencing random restarts of their iPhones. As you can probably imagine, this is a frustrating issue for owners of Apple’s smartphone, with many going online to seek a solution to the problem. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an easy fix for this confounding issue, as at the moment not even Apple can explain why it is happening.

It is unclear exactly how many iOS users have been impacted by these random restarts, but it has certainly become a big enough issue that Apple has created a support page to address the problem. That page offers little in the way of advice however, suggesting that users may experience “unexpected behavior” on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch if any of those devices is running an older version of the mobile operating system.

The support page goes on to suggest that users should update their devices to the latest version of iOS and check to see that all of their apps are up to date as well. This is always good advice of course, as installing updates can often address unexplained instability issues. But in this case, that doesn’t seem to be the cause of the problem, as the iOS users who are reporting issues seem to be running several different versions of the operating system, including iOS 8.4 and the beta versions of iOS 9.

This issue has gotten so bad for some iPhone owners that a Tumblr page was actually created to curate all of the times someone tweeted their frustration over this problem. The blog page quotes a number of people who address the restarts either directly or in passing. The point of the page is to show just how many iOS users are reporting this reoccurring issue on a regular basis.

All of this begs the questions, is your iPhone randomly restarting? Personally, I have had no issues with my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.4. In fact, I’d say all of my devices – which include an iPad Mini 2 and an iPod Touch – that have been updated to the latest version of the mobile OS are running as smoothly as ever. I can’t even remember the last time any of them had a crash that resulted in a restart.

If you are experiencing issues with your devices restarting at odd times, and you’ve already updated your operating system and apps, than the next option is to probably restore the iPhone or iPad altogether. To do so, connect the problematic phone or tablet to your computer and launch iTunes. Next, access your device’s configuration page by selecting it from the device menu. Once the page has loaded, you’ll see a section that indicates the storage capacity and serial number of the iPhone or iPad, as well as the version of iOS that it is running. Below that operating system information is a button that will initiate the restore process.

Hopefully restoring your device will resolve any issues that you are currently having. While this random restarting problem seems to be fairly isolated, it would be good to have it resolved as soon as possible.
