Tap Tap Revenge hits 1 Million iPhone/iPod Touch Users

The team over at Tapulous had a lot to celebrate this weekend. Their game Tap Tap Revolution for the iPhone/iPod Touch, reached 1 Million users on Friday.

That is a tremendous number for a game on the iPhone/iPod Touch. I think it clearly shows that the App Store is having a major impact on the iPhone. Many have called the App Store the true “killer app” of the iPhone, and I’m very happy to see that they may be right.

To me, the store is currently a mixed bag because there is a lot of “junkware” floating around, and Apple is obviously going through growing pains with it – but the potential for the store is unbelievable.

There is so much potential there, and so many great Apps already, that its hard to say too many bad things about the store, but Apple does have a few issues that need to be addressed. One of which is the review system. As it stands now anyone can write a review about the product whether they’ve even downloaded it or not. As a result many applications are getting “one star” reviews from people over things like the fact that they don’t like the icon.

I’d really like to see reviews from people who have actually tried the products, or maybe even some kind of editorial review in place…I’m not sure…I just don’t like seeing reviews from people who haven’t even tried the applications.

All in all though, that’s my biggest gripe with the store at this point. I visit it daily, and I’m getting addicted to trying new stuff. I like the constant stream of new content for the phone, and people are really starting to come up with some creative applications.

Creative business models are showing up too – and that brings me back to Tapulous. The people behind this are geniuses. By offering the product for free – they have already reached a massive user base. Now that the user base is in place…music labels are starting to knock on their door to get their songs in the app…and you can bet premium songs are going to be coming soon – perhaps as an entirely new application.

Whatever their ultimate goal is, I have salute the team on making a fun game that has reached the 1 million mark. More applications will be breaking that million user barrier soon – and its only up from here.

  1. I don’t read any of the reviews in the App Store itself, instead if there is a new application that I’m thinking about buying I’ll search around on Google for a review of it from a reputable source, like you guys, MacWorld, or other bloggers that I’m familiar with.
