Have you ever had this problem with your iPhone?

My wife’s iPhone is acting strangely. It’s not playing any sounds at all through the speaker – except the Ringtone when someone calls. No keyboard clicks, no music, no audio from video files…and everything is turned on.

When she plugs in headphones, everything sounds fine…but when she’s not using the headphones all is silent.

She hasn’t upgraded to 1.1.2 yet, so that might, somehow, correct the problem, but I can’t figure out why this is happening. Has anyone else had this issue?

  1. yes, I have experienced that as well. Try plugging in the headphones and removing them again a few times. It seems that the iPhone ocassionally gets stuck in headphone mode after you pull them out. It can take a couple tries, but eventually the sound will return to the external speakers.

  2. Yup, same thing for me, and same answer as #1, plug-in and out the headphones a bunch of times (it took me 20+ times).

  3. Yeah, do the headphones thing. What happens is that the little grommet which tells the phone that there are headphones plugged in gets stuck in the “down” position, and inserting and removing the jack frees it up.

  4. Exact same thing happens to me. Many posts referring to this on Apple’s discussion boards. Started happening to me the minute I upgraded to 1.1.1, so it’s a little harder for me to believe this is a hardware problem, although it certainly sounds like it. 1.1.2 did not correct this for me. Fiddling maniacally with the headphone jack always fixed the issue. This goes beyond annoyance, as I’ve missed important calls due to this.

  5. how funny the same thing happened to my brother 2 days ago. yes, something is caught making the headphone sensor stuck. it fools the iphone into thinking the headphones are still plugged in. the apple tech cleaned out the headphone jack & the phone was good as new again.

-who ever got a brand new phone from apple for this got lucky!

  6. Two days ago a friends iPhone did the same thing and he said that plugging the headphone in and removing them fixed it… Mine just locked up tonight and I had to try it a few times but everything seems OK now… almost had my hope up to get a factory fresh phone too!

Should probably look into having the headphone jack cleaned (must look like belly-button lint in there).

Ok.
