10 iPhone 5 Concepts

Now that the date is known for Apple’s next big iPhone announcement, all of the speculation about the next iPhone is about to end. Just for fun, let’s take one last look at some the more unlikely-but-cool fan-made iPhone 5 concepts. Depending on what we see on Tuesday, you might just wish one of these were the real deal.

iPhone 5 Concept

This one has an edge-to-edge screen — long rumored to be a feature of the iPhone 5 — and the Home button built into the aluminum body. [Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

Word has it that Steve Jobs has wanted to ditch the Home button for a long time, to create a purer experience with the touchscreen. This one was no doubt inspired by those reports. [Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

A clear phone has a certain novelty appeal, but let’s be serious. This is a total pie-in-the-sky notion, not to mention that its usefulness is questionable at best. [Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

I rather like the idea of an all-aluminum unibody iPhone. And again, no Home button. I could see this one happening. [Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

A radically redesigned iOS user interface highlights this smooth design with rounded-off edges. I love how it hides the rear camera lens inside the Apple logo. That’s an idea I’m surprised Apple hasn’t already used. [Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

The always-reliable Isamu Sanada (he never gets them right, but his concepts always look amazing enough to rival the work of Apple’s Jonathan Ive) designed this super clean look, inspired by the current-generation aluminum iMac. [Source]

Antoine Brieux’s dramatic redesign changes the entire aesthetic with rounded-off top and bottom edges. [Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

This one marries the edge-to-edge screen rumors with an ultra-thin form factor. As cool as it looks, it begs the question: at what point does thin become too thin?[Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

This is the one I’d most like to see become reality. It incorporates almost all of the iPhone 5’s rumored features, including a thinner design, wider screen, and tapered aluminum rear. Also interesting is the lack of excessive buttons on the sides, and how a USB power cord port has been placed on the back.[Source]

iPhone 5 Concept

Apple has been testing the viability of a curved touchscreen for a while now, so this one isn’t as far fetched as you might think (though I think it’ll be at least another generation or two before we see it in action.) Everybody knows curves are sexy. So I can understand the aesthetic appeal. The idea alone has that signature Apple cool factor. What I don’t get is the purpose. But aside from putting the mouthpiece a couple of millimeters closer to your mouth, what would be the point? [Source]

  1. First one: looks like a Zune Hd – you can count that one out.
    Second one: looks possible
Third one: They’re not going to make it clear
Fourth one: maybe… the slightly curved aluminum backing is possible
Fifth one: same deal as the first, only this time with the GUI – they’re not going to copy any details of a MS product.
    Sixth one: possibly
Seventh one: Not going to happen
Eighth one: you literally can’t make that one because of the way the screen is set up – you need a boarder on the side.
Ninth one: looks interesting, but it doesn’t match other apple products – so it’s not going to happen unless apple does a complete redesign of all their products
tenth one: Also impossible (unless you like phones that cost several grand just for the screen) It also couldn’t be touch sensitive, capacitive touch screen require a very specific type of glass, and the only factory in the world that produces it, can only produce it in small, flat sheets – and I’m pretty sure the actual curve of the glass would create problems with the actual operation of the screen as well (since you would end up with uneven distribution of charge across the screen, making the touch sensor less sensitive/inaccurate/completely non functional)

Only the second and fourth ones looks even remotely likely to share any characteristics with the iPhone 5.
