The article will tell you what else you can expect to see on the new updates.

Do Apple Maps Keep History?

Apple has ensured your personal information is safe by building privacy into the Maps.  For instance, you’re not required to sign in when using this feature.  On-device intelligence is used to create personalized features.

Further, the whole data generated through the Maps, such as the navigating route, search terms, traffic information, is linked to random identifiers that reset regularly to avoid connecting the location and search data kept on the server to a person.

Additionally, the Maps conceals any user’s location on the company’s servers using the “fuzzing” process.  Instead, it converts any precise details about the location to one done within 24 hours.

Which is Better between Apple Maps and Google Maps?

Apple Maps and Google Maps are competing navigation apps trying to reach millions of users globally.  Here is how you can figure it out.

Availability

Apple Maps is only available to its own line of products.  That means users without iPhone, Mac, and other products not made by Apple have zero means of accessing the feature.

Google Maps is accessible by almost all devices, including iPhone, Mac, CarPlay owned by Apple, Windows, and Android.  In other words, you don’t need to worry when you get a new device and need directions.  Just log in with your Gmail account to sync all your data, including favorite locations and journey history.

Therefore, Apple Maps can’t beat Google’s almost universal availability.

Interface

Both Apple Maps and Google Maps have had several years of refinement.  As a result, their interfaces are easy to use, although they present information differently.

Apple Maps’ interface is simple, and everything is in one place.  By expanding the search bar, you can get information about places and businesses, saved locations, and recent search history.  The search bar will remain at one spot until you click on a place.  You can also delete it by tapping the X button at the corner.

Google Maps has toolbars and buttons everywhere.  You have the search bar at the top of the screen of your phone, which also contains account information.  It’s also located above a button that helps you search for local amenities.  At the bottom, you have a menu that gives you access to Explore and Commute features, local news, saved locations, as well as an option to add information to Google’s mapping database.

Map Design

Apple Maps has taken a minimalist approach, yet it has a lot of information.  You must zoom in to get more information about a specific location.  iOS 15 has enhanced Apple Maps, and users can now get information like bus and taxi lanes, turn lanes, crosswalks, and much more.

Google Maps gives you more information as soon as you click on it.  It will show you valuable details like crosswalks, stop signs, etc.  The map has been showing details for complex highway interchanges.

Both Maps provide essential information such as locations, roads, landmarks, etc.  They also have a dark mode to help you during late-night driving.  They’re different based on the information they offer, such as smaller road names, businesses, etc.

Navigation

There is minimal difference in the way both Maps get you places.  Apple Maps and Google Maps follow your journey distance, travel time, and current ETA.  They will allow you to stay on the freeway, and when you reach a turn, it will change and notify you.

Both give you current conditions on your route, such as road closures, traffic, etc.  They also suggest alternate routes if the present one is congested.  They also provide information regardless of the mode of travel, such as driving, cycling, walking, and public transport.

The difference is that both apps have similar primary routes but wildly different alternates.  Both apps will take you to the destination in an almost similar amount of time despite this difference.

Discovery

Aside from moving from point to point, both apps help you discover gas stations, restaurants, parking lots, or other points of interest.

Apple Maps allows you to tap and expand the search bar.  Its “Find Nearby” gives you a list of categories and will enable you to select the most relevant one.  However, Google Maps has a full list compared to Apple Maps.  The handful of options is based on your location and what you’re looking for.  The app has Guides loaded with relevant editorial content to help get familiar with any particular area.

Google Maps has buttons underneath the search bar and a broad list of categories.  The Explore tab located at the bottom of the screen offers you a generalized overview of the area.  It’s expected that more updates will be added to give you specific recommendations.  For instance, if you search for a restaurant in the morning, Google Maps will provide coffee shops and other establishments serving breakfast while excluding locations open for lunch and dinner.

Privacy

Apple has made tremendous progress when it comes to users’ privacy.  It uses fuzzing to ensure anonymity.  It doesn’t store your information about your location and searches, or in other words, your data doesn’t reach any Apple server.  Your personalized data collected from Apple Maps is stored on your device instead of the server.  This allows you to delete it whenever you want.

Google Maps is the opposite because all of your activities go through Google’s servers.  It also uses data collected from your searches and travels to personalize Google ads.  In fact, that is how Google makes money.

Therefore each app is superior based on what you’re looking for.  Apple focuses more on your privacy and uses the data to make improvements.  On the other hand, Google Maps offers real-time updates on how busy the train or store might be.  This is way beyond what Apple Maps offers.
