How to Fix Sticky Keys on MacBook

6 Steps to Fix Sticky Keys

Troubleshooting may require:

  • Precision cleaning or electronics cleaning kit;
  • dishwashing liquid;
  • paper towels or napkins;
  • isopropyl alcohol;
  • cup or similar container;
  • spudger;
  • toothpicks.

1. Preparation

First, you need to turn the device off. To do this, move the cursor over the Apple symbol in the upper left corner of the display and select “Turn off”. This will help avoid a short circuit if liquid gets on the button contacts.

2. Cleaning with Isopropyl Alcohol and a Toothpick

Dip a cotton pad in isopropyl alcohol avoiding excessive wetness. Clean the area around the keys. Replace the cotton pads with clean ones as they become soiled and repeat the procedure. If areas are hard to reach, use a toothpick to clean debris from under the keys.

Turn on your MacBook and check whether the buttons work. If the problem persists, go to the next step.

3. Removing the Keys

Sticky keys should be removed using a spudger or similar plastic tool. Lift the keys and carefully remove them from the case. Do not use metal objects to avoid damaging the contacts.

If small parts become detached when removing the keys, don’t worry. These are media that can be easily installed again. Take the two parts, align them, and connect them until they click into place. Insert the item into the keypad socket and press lightly to lock it in place.

4. Cleaning with Soapy Water

Prepare a soap solution by mixing water and dishwashing liquid in a cup. Put all the keys in, then let them soak for 10 minutes. Dry the keys with a towel or cloth and proceed to the next step.

5. Treatment with Alcohol

Clean the keys and the area under them with cotton pads moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Dry the keys with a paper towel.

6. Installing the Keys

Make sure that the keyboard keys are clean and dry. Wait as long as necessary until they are completely dry or wipe them with paper towels.

To reinstall the keys, place them in the center of the slot and press gently, then move them from side to side until you hear a click.
