If you use NeoOffice, you’ll be glad to know there that version 2.2.1 is now available. The latest version of the free application suite now includes support of the Mac OS spellchecker and address book, along with experimental compatibility with the new Microsoft Office file standards.

NeoOffice is an OS X native version of Open Office, the free open source alternative to Microsoft’s leading Office suite.

I’ve always been a big fan of NeoOffice, even if it is a bit slow, but now I would have to say that I recommend iWork ’08 over the NeoOffice suite – but still, if you’re looking for a no cost Office suite solution, NeoOffice is a great choice.

  1. I tried the iWork demo. I’m sticking with NeoOffice. The fact that you can’t save files as .doc or .xls by default was a deal breaker. I need to access files from time to time from a PC at work. It’s a pain to have to export everything at home to .doc and .xls everytime, in the event that I might need to open it in Word/Execel at work. Then when I change it at work, I have to remember to delete the old numbers/pages file at home and replace it with the new .doc/.xls file. Way too much work.

Does someone know a way around this?

Wouldn’t you have to replace the file at home whether you were exporting it, or just saving as? I mean, what’s the difference between saving it as a .doc, or exporting it as as .doc when you’re talking about the file you’re working on at home?

I’m not really sure I understand why clicking on Export instead of Save As is causing you a problem…it’s only one more click.

    I must be missing something…
