It was widely rumored before the announcement of the 3G iPhone that there was a third sensor on the front of the device. MacNN has confirmed that that is – in fact – true.

The new 3rd sensor is an additional proximity sensor designed to help improve face-detection functionality. The sensors are located together in a “J” shape to the left of the iPhone speaker.

So, nothing new about the sensor other than improved existing functionality.
