UPDATED (AGAIN): First Impressions: iPhone Video – Not So Good…

Table of Contents

iphone_screen.jpgI don’t know if it’s just my iPhone, or what, but the video on my iPhone looks so bad it’s completely unwatchable. It looks like it’s displaying 256 colors or something. The video looks like a badly compressed JPEG.

In fact, so do my photos.

I don’t know what the problem is, but this is NOT a good way to get started.

The phone features seem to work just fine, and the thing plays music and all of that well, but the video and my pictures look like complete and total garbage. If this is how video is supposed to look on the iPhone, then there is no way you should buy one. Stick with your iPod.

I suspect there is something wrong with the iPhone that I have.

I am on hold with Apple Care right now…I’ll let you know if I find anything out…

UPDATE – I am still on the phone with Apple Care. I have been for over an hour. They are trying every possible thing to see if this is a software or settings issue. While waiting I also called the AT&T store where I purchased it, and they have already agreed to replace it in the morning if I can’t get it fixed with Apple.

Well after almost 3 hours on the phone with Apple Tech support they gave up. This iPhone is a piece of crap. I’m going to go to the AT&T store in the morning and exchange it and see what happens…this has been a miserable waste of a day, and I cannot express to you in words how frustrating this entire process has been.

Before talking to Apple this iPhone worked…after i got done making the changes they told me to it did not work at all, and as of right now I have no cell phone whatsoever.

The Apple folks and AT&T folks have been nothing but helpful, and with any luck the new iPhone i pick up tomorrow will work fine.

  1. Hopefully it is just yours having that issue, or I suspect there’ll be a lawsuit brewing very soon.

  2. Sorry to hear that Michael, mine seems to be working fine. Best of luck getting it working asap!

  3. Well I successfully turned my 88 Nissan into an iPhone.
I stood in line for about 2 and a half house and I got my 8gig iphone.
Havnen’t really had a chance to play with it yet but so far I love it!

sorry to hear your already having trouble with yours but I’m sure it’ll work out.

I’ll post along with you, sharing my daily experiences.

  4. I gotta chuckle, especially after Jeremy here mentions lawsuit. Do you by chance, A) Live in Illinois and B) Happen to be an attorney? Calm down, boy, calm down!

If you didn’t get point A, let me enlighten you…I live in Illinois and we are well-known for suing at the drop of a hat. Most likely thanks to the nice folks up in the Chicago-area. At any rate, to sue over this is nonsense since you HAD to expect SOME glitches with a first generation device of this magnitude. Especially after all the hype…Brace yourself kids, there’s more to come!!

  5. Oops…that being said, sorry to here about your luck. Get back to the store and exchange away! (Must have snuck one of them Chinese knock-offs into the bunch!)

  6. Be grateful for what you have in your hands, even if it’s broken and you know you’re going to get a replacement 🙂

In Europe, it’s iPhone frustration “à gogo”, we have to wait another couple of months (or even longer). And … there is no European carrier that is able to do what AT&T does for you guys in the USA. I’m kind of exiting to see what the launch of the iPhone will bring us in Europe, because it’s no secret that you are way ahead of us when it comes to service plans and data connectivity for mobile devices.

    Mad iPhone greetings from Belgium.

  7. OK… solved my problem… I had converted movies to format an ipod, not an iphone!!!

This phone is AMAZING!!!! Seriously, unreal!!!!

  8. I just spent the past hour looking at post after post after post of people complaining about what a piece of crap the iPhone is. Image spending $600 for a shiny brick!! Looks like the good/bad experience is 50/50. Not good.

The main reason I was waiting for the 2nd generation was to see if there was a pay as you go plan. I’m not shelling out $60 a month for a cell phone. The plans are a rip. My wife also wanted one too. So we’d have to cough up $100 a month for a family plan. What a rip.

  9. @krye

I can totally imagine what it’s like to spend $600 for a junked out phone…but I’m hoping Apple will fix it.

As for the plans, they’re actually not bad at all when compared to other phone plans…in fact, Blackberry or PDA Data plan users will actually SAVE money with these plans over the standard rates.

  10. Jimmy: I imagine that the 3G network will be able to provide things like the interactive voicemail and all the data requirements of the iPhone. It’s also got extremely good Europe-wide coverage and very fast data rates.

I hope Vodafone get the contract – their contracts have always been reasonable, and their coverage is excellent. Their roaming has always been top-notch, too.

  11. My Iphone is not working. My video/pictures are horrible on iphone screen. and I got many dropped calls. Especially, I missed my very important appointment cuz a call did not reach to my iphone.

I’m going to return it even if I pay the penelty. I can’t stand this phone. Sorry Apple, but I have to get calls.
