Android on the iPhone

Table of Contents

I guess it’s YouTube day here at AG, because I’m all about it today. I found this one the other day, and I thought it was pretty cool.

And enterprising young man by the name of David Wang – a member of the iPhone Dev Team – figured out a way to dual boot the iPhone. So how does it work? I’ll let Cnet describe it:

The demo shows the boot process–complete with the Tux Linux mascot–and Wang using Android for browsing, receiving a text message, answering a phone call, and playing music. The phone is set up with a dual-boot configuration and indeed the video begins with the device running iPhone OS.

“It’s not really production-quality yet,” Wang said on the video. “I’d say it’s alpha quality. But pretty much everything works.”

I’m not a huge fan of jailbroken iPhones, mostly because I don’t see any need to modify the iPhone system. That, and if I break it, I’m screwed. But watching other people do it gives me a sense of awe and admiration for having a technical skill that I only wish I could have. This most likely won’t turn into a retail product that everyone uses, but fact is, it sure would be neat to run Android on a piece of equipment that I actually want to use.
