30 Days of iPhone – Day 6

Does it say something about a device when it is easy enough for a 4 year old to use?

I think it does.

My daughter has been interested in the iPhone since the day I came home with it, and I have let her press a few buttons on it over the course of the last week, but today I let her sit down and see what she could do with it.

She unlocked it, then went straight to the calender application and started counting, pointing to each number on the calender, highlighting it, then saying it aloud. When she had finished that, she decided that she wanted to call her grandmother.

She tapped the green phone, and it happened to be in the “C” on the contact page, which is where her grandmother’s name is. She can’t fully read yet, but she identified the name, touched it, then received confirmation when she saw her grandmother’s picture.

She then touched a phone number and called her grandmother.

When she was finished I told her to press the red button, and she did, to end the call.

I think this is the core reason why the iPhone has been so successful. It’s easy to use…and there aren’t many Phones that can say that.

  1. I can see that some people (without kids) might think that that’s lame, or just don’t get it. I have 3.5 year old twins, and yes, that’s awesome.

  2. I started showing my 19 month old some of the pictures on the phone, and then I showed him how to flick his finger across the screen to scroll through them. Now when he sees me holding the phone, he comes up to me and says “Pictures?” and we have to sit down and go through the photo library, naming off everybody in the pictures. It’s one of about 15 words he can say, so I find that really cool.
