30 Days of AppleTV – Day 24

I have another minor gripe with the AppleTV (and maybe there is a better way to do this that I don’t know about).

There are some shows that I only want the current episode of on the AppleTV. There are other shows that I am watching by the season that I would like to have all on AppleTV. As best I can tell, there is no way to do that.

Plus, there are some shows that I want to keep on the AppleTV after I have watched an episode (for example, “Mickey Mouse Club House” for my daughter), but not everything (or example, I don’t need the last episode of “Raines” that I’ve watched to stick around taking up hard drive space on the AppleTV).

It’s a sofware fixable thing, but it’s starting to drive me nuts. I want to be able to delete content that I don’t want taking up space on my AppleTV hard drive, like I can with a Tivo.

Comments

  1. If it is like an iPod then you should be able to make a smart playlist to do what you want. i make them for my audiobooks to drop off once listened to so I know what i have heard and what I have not. Try that and see if it helps.

  2. So are you saying that you have to delete it via the computer, rather than from the AppleTV itself? Since the iPod works the same way, they might change that.

  3. Chris is correct. The quick-and-easy “TV Shows” tab under TV is just that – quick and easy. It’ll let you sync, say, 5 most recent or 5 unwatched episodes of TV shows. Anything beyond that is already solved with Smart Playlists, so there’s no point in complicating that particular tab.

  4. Well, I don’t think smart playlists will work in this particular situation. The only place I have a playlists option on my AppleTV is in the music section…not the TV Show section…

…and even still, a smart playlist is not going to do what I want, which is to allow me to delete content off of the AppleTV itself when I’m done with it.

  5. That’s a good point. Eventually the hd will fill up, and what then?

  6. A thought – and it’s a major kludge – would be to reset the play count of the shows you want AppleTV to keep on its hard drive. Not sure if resetting the count in iTunes will sync down to the AppleTV. Might be worth a try.
