Earlier reports that shot around the web this week suggested that Apple was going to charge customers with new Intel based Macs $4.99 to enable the 802.11n capability in the Wi-Fi chips found in systems…but now Apple has officially confirmed the charge, and the price for it is $1.99.
“The nominal distribution fee for the 802.11n software is required in order for Apple to comply with generally accepted accounting principles for revenue recognition, which generally require that we charge for significant feature enhancements, such as 802.11n, when added to previously purchased products,” Fox said in a statement.
Fanboys and girls all over the ‘net have their own opinions on the validity of this claim that “accounting” is forcing their hand…and I’m not sure I buy it myself…but when it comes down to it…it’s only $2 bucks.
No matter what your opinion on it is, you can avoid the fee by purchasing the new Airport Extreme for $179.
