Apple Gets Greener

Apple’s Recycling Program just got a big upgrade. Starting today, your old iPhones and iPads have been added to the list of eligible products you can send in to Apple for recycling — and you could get an Apple Gift Card in exchange. And that’s not all…

For a while now, Apple has offered to take back your old MacBook or iMac in exchange for a gift card of “fair market value,” usable online or at an Apple Retail Store. Apple expanded the program today to include used iPhones and iPads, but they’re not saying what that “fair market value” is. It’s probably different for every return, based on how old the product is, what condition it’s in, how much wear & tear it’s got, etc. Here’s the catch: used products are only eligible if they’re able to be refurbished. If they’re a complete write-off, Apple will still recycle it for you at no cost, but you get nothing in return.

Also added to Apple’s recycling program today: they’ll now accept all computers and displays, regardless of manufacturer. Macs, non-Macs, it doesn’t even matter if you’re buying a new Mac for yourself. Apple will recycle it for you for free. You don’t even have to pay for shipping.

  1. Hats off to this effort in greening up our environment, and reduction of e-waste! Many older mac products were built pretty sturdily, and have just been overtaken by time. For example, my eleven year old G3 still runs perfectly, yet unfortunately can no longer handle the processing requirements of today. Hopefully this kind of gesture will lead to new green products coming into the market continuously.
