Palm CEO laughs off iPhone

palmceo.jpgAccording to the Mercury News Palm CEO Ed Colligan laughed off the idea that any company – including Apple – could easily win customers in the finicky smart-phone sector.

Colligan was quoted as saying:

“We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone…PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”

I have to say – that may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard a CEO say in my life.

I’m sure there was a point when the guys at Creative were sitting around saying saying the same thing about MP3 players…and we all know how that worked out, don’t we?

My guess is that this time next year, this won’t seem so funny to Mr. Colligan.

  1. It seems like a short-sighted comment to me. Although Apple had shown in the past how it failed with its Newton, but I feel that Steve Jobs and co., have something up their sleeves and this time it’s going to be real.

January is just around the corner. Let see.

  2. Well lets not get confused here… Everyone has been ranting and raving about an iPhone as a Phone/MP3 player. That does not a smartphone make. Even if it had say calendar and address book functionality that wouldnt necessarily make it a smartphone.. No no, a smart phone needs to have some serious communication power behind it… file display and possibly editing, syncrhonization (preferably server based as well as machine based) plus the phone and most likely the now pseudo standard camera and video capture. Personally i couldnt care less whether it plays MP3’s as its doubtful to come with a big enough memory capacity (i need at least 20GB for my music collection – i dont like the “oh ill take this album with me today” mentality – i take it all… everywhere) nor do i really care about camera/video… the only thing i want is a built in IMAP client, Some kind of server based calendaring, and AFP over SSH/iDisk client… Then it would be a beautiful device i had to by right away… if its just a RCKR done correctly ill pass and get a Treo.
