I Use My iPhone More for Twitter than for Phone Calls

I’ve noticed something over the time that I’ve been the owner of an iPhone. I don’t actually use the phone part except when I have to. I don’t like making phone calls…in fact, I don’t care for the entire phone call making process.

Maybe it’s just because I write so much. I prefer it, and with my job, I spend most of my time communicating with work, my friends, readers, listeners, and PR people all with the written word, Either by IMing, Emailing, Blog posts, or even good old Twitter.

My Twitter Account (which you can find right here) is something that I spend far to much time on. I don’t post near as much as some of the Twitter power users, but if I have a free moment while waiting in line (even at a red light sometimes) I open up Twitterfon and take a look at what’s happening in the world on my Twitter stream.

Tweeting, txting, and IMing from my iPhone are all ways I would rather communicate with people – rather than talking on the phone. Sometimes I wish I could just get the iPhone without the phone part (but still with the data plan…I need my 3G).

It makes me curious…am I alone here? How many of you don’t use your iPhone as a phone as often as you use it for Twitter and txting?

  1. You mean you can make phone calls on the iPhone, too?

Sadly, I know exactly what you mean. The iPhone has made me far more addicted to things like Twitter and Facebook than I ever would have been with just a plain old laptop. Or my old garden variety PDA cell phone. I’m now one of those people who’s always bumping into things because I’m trying to look at what’s going on in iPhone world. Yes, I know it’s pathetic. I’m ok with it.

  2. I treat my iphone still as a ipod – twitter and email – only use the ph to call the wife!

  3. I definitely use my iPhone more for not-phone things (twitter, e-mail, facebook, etc.) than as a phone. Part of that is that, in generally, I don’t talk on the phone that often.

  4. I’m the same. I hate the phone. I really don’t like talking to people on the phone. I use the iPhone for everything else. I only use the phone when my wife needs to get a hold off me. I got my 3G the launch weekend last summer and I think my total phone usage since then is about 3 hours.

  5. yeah. me too. I use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Loopt, IM, AIM Chat, and email several times a day, each. I just looked at my call log, and my last actual phone call was 3 days ago. And i used a grand total of 34 minutes last month.
Now, I have a Vonage phone at home that I talk to family and close friends with, but for everyday friends and acquaintances, i prefer teh freedom of replying when it’s convenient for me.

  6. Sounds like you wasted your money on buying an iPhone. You should of got iTouches instead but hey…. “COMMON SENSE THAT ISN”T THAT COMMON AT ALL”

  7. I’m the same way, 98% other things 2% phone.

  8. @Richard

So, Richard (or should I say Dick?) – did you not read the part about needing the data plan for the 3G Internet or are you just trying to be a snarky ass?

    Just curious,

    Michael

  9. You tweet at the red light? That’s against the law now in California…. prob. not too far off in TX. But still doesn’t “stop” anybody.

  10. @arajara

No, I look at Twitter at the red light. Very big difference. :)

  11. I just upgraded to the iPhone on 19 January.
I find that I use the iPhone more as a Twitter client and for weather apps than as a phone.
I Twitter via WiFi at home and via 3G when not.

  12. Twitter is a glorified text messaging platform … nothing more, and a huge productivity killer. As with the internet itself, 99.9% of Tweets are totally and utterly useless.
