The Kansas City Public School system will be distributing 5,000 Macbooks to high school students as part of their one-to-one computing initiative. Earlier this year the school board voted to lease the Macbook for students, and later modified the initiative to allow the students to “check out” the computer for use at home.
This is one of the first initiatives in Kansas to provide computers like this to low income students. For example, 75% of students in the Kansas City school district qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, and it is highly unlikely that they would be able to afford computers (at least high quality computers) at home. This program hopes to help educate the students, and give them valuable computer skills that will last a lifetime.
It’ll also probably be making a few more Mac users ta boot – which is always a good thing. 😛
