Following the iPad 2’s release, many first generation owners have decided to upgrade. While selling your old model is an option, donating it for educational purposes is your chance to do something good.
Apple has announced a trade-in program that allows previous iPad owners to donate their last generation tablet to a teacher in a low-income school. The program is in effect at all Apple retail stores. The program is a first and is part of Apple’s heavy push in to the education sector with the iPad.
Teach For America sponsors the program and is directing interested contributors to Apple’s retail site for more information. All received tablets will likely be repurposed erase all information in the process. However, wiping your personal information before visiting an Apple retail store is ideal.
There is no official statement from Apple or Teach For America if iPad donations are tax deductible. According to MacNN, Teach For America is a 501(c)(3) corporation which allows for tax deductible donations.

Yea, the bloated and ineffective education system needs more gifts. No, sell it on eBay and let someone have a shot at it.
