The Big Picture for the iPhone

Table of Contents

I grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts, which makes me a die-hard Celtics and Red Sox fan. I’ve only been back once in the past 20 years or so, and whenenver I get homesick, I surf on over to the Boston Globe’s website, where I can see how my teams are doing and catch up on the latest local events. One really cool feature of the site though is The Big Picture. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the site publishes absolutely gorgeous pictures in huge sizes – 990X650 pixels – with sometimes shocking clarity. The best thing is that you never really know what you’ll find on the site, with some days having cute pictures of animals in winter, to brutally graphic shots of the war in Iraq. It’s an intense site, and one of my favorites to check out.

As you’ve probably already guessed, they now have an app for the iPhone [iTunes Link], and one for the iPad is coming soon. It’s not free unfortunately, but at $1.99 it’s not a small fortune, either. The app works just like the site. Just fire up the program and see the latest and greatest from the site, updated on the same schedule.

It seems a little odd to me to pay for content that you can get for free online, particularly when you can just surf over to the site on your iPhone. I’m not sure how well they’re going to do with it, but I guess ultimately, people will vote with their credit cards.
