For those of you who aren’t on my twitter feed and don’t follow every nuance of this AG writer’s life, here’s a scoop: My wife and I are expecting our first child in about four weeks. Am I scared? Of course I am. I have the Lego Death Star sitting on my desk, I don’t know how I’m mature enough to handle a child, much less myself.

Of course, some people are born to be good parents, and that seems to be the case with Barbara and C.C. Chamberlin of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Las Cruces Sun-News recently put out a piece on an iPhone/iPod Touch app that the couple developed themselves just to help their kids learn the alphabet. It’s called  Letter Writer Oceans (Preschool ABC’s) [opens iTunes], and is available on the iPhone for just $1.99.

As the image above shows, the app shows a letter on the screen, then has a fun fish or ocean creature go down and around the letter, showing the child how to properly write the letter by tracing with their finger. It’s a cool little program, and it’s designed so that toddlers with chubby hands can navigate the app by themselves.

This isn’t the first time that a small couple or family has put out their own app, but it is a pretty cool story. I’m a long ways off from needing something like this in my house, but it’s good to know that there are people out there using the iPhone to help kids learn. Hell, maybe I’ll start working on one.
