Dvorak not impressed with iPhone

My favorite Cranky Geek John C. Dvorak doesn’t seem to impressed with the iPhone in this video from CNBC.

BTW – I don’t know about you guys, but I’m getting a little tired of writing about the iPhone. Expect some non-iPhone related stuff soon…and some more iPhone related stuff after that. 😉

  1. Yeah… I would not agree with him at all, I think this is where phones are going. If I have a little device, like a blackjack. I dont want a keyboard on it, I want a big screen to look at. I want an iPhone!

    I am looking forward to the non-iPhone posts Michael, I am so sick of iPhone posts, although I find myself blogging about it everyday also! 🙂

    I agree with you…I’m getting just a little bit burned out on the iPhone, but I still have at least two more iPhone related posts coming in the next day or so…but next week we’ll definetly be moving on…doing more Software Spotlights, we might have a few product reviews, and maybe…just maybe a contest to give some stuff away.

    I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a little tired of reading about Dvorak. Look, he knows that everyone is gushing about the iPhone. So he figures he’ll get on Digg and if he talks down about it, in the media or on When was the last time Dvorak contributed something novel and interesting to the conversation, Apple-related or not? He’s thoroughly done.

  4. I think it was a nice move for apple to come out with the apple iPhone. The iPhone has most features consumers have been waiting to have. I also think the price will not deter people from buying the Apple iPhone. I even think they will sell more then the 10 million Apple iPhones they expect to sell within the next year.

    Dvorak is right.

    All the hype about the iPhone’s user interface, but what is *the* most important part of the human-machine interface? HOW YOU GET DATA INTO THE DEVICE! Email and web browsing are pointless — mere toys — if you cannot enter text efficiently.

    Jobs glossed over this in his keynote, claiming vaguely that an on-screen is revolutionary. It’s not. It’s ancient.

    None of the early portable devices didn’t have thumb keyboards, either. They tried lots of different ways to solve the input problem — handwriting recognition, on-screen QUERTY keyboards, on-screen “speed-pecking” layouts, voice recognition, etc. — but the most effective experiment was the Blackberry. That two-thumb keyboard ended up showing up on a variety of devices because *by popular demand*. All the iPhone’s competitors have it *because it works*. You can type on them quickly, and you can do it by feel because you have real buttons. Poking out messages on a touch screen on letter at a time is a step back to early Palm days.

    Basically, the best things about the iPhone is (1) sexy industrial design, (2) very easy to use media player with a big, pretty screen. As a phone and internet communication device, it’s sub par. Taking away that keyboard makes it look cooler, and gives you more surface area for screen, but it makes it suck for typing — especially without looking at it (you can touch type on a Blackberry, call people with one hand, etc.).

    The Japanese are completely uninterested in the iPhone, because it’s very dated by their standards. A 2G phone just can’t do all the things they already take for granted in Japan:,0,4485071.story?coll=kcpq-news-3

    So calling the iPhone a “re-invention of the phone”, when there are lots of phones that are much more advances, is 100% marketing hype. Period. But the Apple faithful drink the KoolAid without a second thought, every time.
