Apple On TV: Planet of the Apps

Table of Contents

I was cruising the channels yesterday, eating some Cheerios and getting ready for the day, when I came across an interesting title on the DirectV channel guide. Planet of the Apps: A Hand Held Revolution. Well, that should be good for some interesting info, so I gave it a peek.

From the site:

Apps are everywhere. In less than two years, the app craze has taken over. These small applications – or apps – that fit on our mobile phone do everything from helping us accomplish mundane tasks to keeping us entertained while we wait for the bus.

Apps are popular and profitable. Studies estimate, the Apple iPhone apps store alone generates about $200 million a month in sales. Innovative and often addictive apps are changing the way we work and live.

Welcome to Planet of the Apps: A Handheld Revolution. In this hour we’ll look at how apps have changed our lives, meet some of the creators behind them, and figure out just how big a business they really are.

CNBC’s Planet of the Apps: A Hand-held Revolution takes a look at how the industry is changing the way we live.

I find it interesting that the word App is now common vernacular, like that’s what we always called computer programs. I can’t ever recall telling someone “Yeah, I just got that new Photoshop CS2 App for my Gateway,” it was more, “Hey, what program did you buy? That’s neat.” But now, everyone calls them apps. Not programs, not applications – apps.

And what’s weirder to me is the concept that EVERYONE calls them apps, not just some elitist segment of the population. And since it’s an Apple-specific term to me, I find it really weird when the show referred to BlackBerry as getting into the App business, and how the Droid was going to do Apps as well.

Overall, it was an interesting program, and worthy of recording on the old Tivo. Of course, it’s all going to be rehashed info for most of you, but there was a neat walk through on a company making an app, plus a little bit on the development process. Take a look around and see if you can find it playing locally.
