On the one hand, you can design your cave using ChatGPT and Google. On the other hand, it’s better to let an expert do the job to avoid any sort of embarrassing situations. But how can you tell if this or that designer is right for the job? After all, it’s not only about changing curtains, hanging sun catchers window shutters, or getting a new picture. The process is more complex, and you have to collaborate with someone who understands your vision and knows how to make things happen. Don’t know what to ask? We did some homework for you, listing the questions to ask before you spend your bucks.

#1 What is your design style and approach?

Every professional has a signature style or a particular philosophy in a design niche. It can be anything from modern and traditional to minimalist, boho, or eclectic. Ask them:

  • Can you please describe your style?
  • Do you consider the client’s preferences or stick to the chosen aesthetic?
  • Is it OK for you to work with the furniture/décor that I already own?

The answers to these simple questions help you understand if the tastes of you two can co-exist in the micro-universe of your home.

#2 What are your steps of work?

While this one may seem to be obvious to you, a lot of people forget to clarify the process. It looks like an expert knows your goal, but how is s/he going to make it real? Is it more of a hands-off process or a collaboration? Discussing every step and understanding how the designer is going to help you will 100% boost your relationship with a creative expert.

#3 Can I check your portfolio?

Their past work is the solidest proof of their skills and experience. When you check out their portfolio, make sure to see if they have ever had projects similar to yours. Does the quality of work comply with your demands? Do their designs look trendy and always en vogue?

#4 What are your fees?

Yes, we do know that talking about $ is quite taboo. However, it is crucial to know how much they charge to see whether a designer is the right one in your case. Thus, you will avoid negative situations.

#5 What services do you offer?

The reality is that not all professionals render the same range of services. For example, some can manage the whole project from A to Z (selection of materials, space planning, on-site supervision, furniture sources, etc.), while others offer only some conceptual design. It is crucial to know what is on the list and what is not before you shake hands to seal the deal.

#6 How will you resolve issues, if any?

Approach your potential designer and ask about their protocol for when something goes wrong. For instance, you have to know what they are going to do if a design element is installed incorrectly or if this or that piece arrives damaged. They don’t know what to answer? Red flag!

Hiring a pro interior designer is about three main cornerstones – professionalism, communication, and trust. Asking things above will help you choose the right helper and breathe new life into your apartment.
