Want a White iPhone 4? Hope You Like Waiting

I’ve been wondering why the Apple store wouldn’t let you pre-order the white iPhone 4, and now, we have a reason, straight from Apple:

White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

This is both surprising and not surprising to me. My first iPhone was a white iPhone 3G, because I figured that a white iPhone reminded me more of my white iPod, and therefore, was cool. I quickly changed my mind on that decision, but only after I received it. I only had a twinge of buyer’s remorse over that one. When it came time to upgrade to the 3GS, I went with black to settle the score.

Honestly, part of the reason that I didn’t like the white 3G and 3GS was because the entire phone wasn’t white. When the iPhone 4 came out, I instantly loved it in white, but knew in the back of my mind that I’d hate myself if I went with that color. Instead, I went with black, even though I’d later learn that I didn’t have a choice. Such is life.

But my friends don’t feel the same way. At least two of my Apple buddies really wanted white and were disappointed when they couldn’t get it on launch day. Looks like we’ll be seeing more black iPhone 4s than white, but is that a big surprise at all anyways?
