T-Mobile claims Android pre-orders are stronger than expected

T-Mobile is shouting to the heavens that pre-orders of the T-Mobile G1, the first phone to feature Google’s Android OS, are stronger than they expected, and they can no longer guarantee that you’ll get one on Oct. 22nd if you pre-order it…but they do say that you’ll be able to walk into a store on the 22nd and get one…so…whatever.

The device is apparently selling at 3 times what T-Mobile expected…but they haven’ told anyone what they expected thus far…so it’s kind of hard to tell how well the phone is actually doing.

With recent reports revealing that the iPhone is not the 2nd best selling mobile phone in the industry (behind only the Motorola Razor in units sold) the G1 is going to have a long way to go before it gets anywhere near the numbers of the iPhone. Of course, with Google’s Microsoft-inspired OS strategy, the G1 doesn’t HAVE to get anywhere near the iPhone in number of units sold…so it’s going to be a very interesting next few months, as we see just where the mobile computing war takes us.
