New iPhone Ads remind me of the “Switch” Campaign

These new iPhone ads that Apple posted last night are personal stories from individuals talking about the various things that are awesome about their iPhone. One guy talks about how he only has to carry one device now, another guy talks about how visual voice mail is one of the greatest inventions in the history of mankind, and another guy talks about how he used his iPhone to look up a woman’s name he didn’t know.

Honestly, I don’t think these are Apple’s best work. They’re ok, but certainly nothing spectacular. They remind me of the Switch ads, both in style and execution, but, to me, the things they’re talking about don’t really seem all that impressive. I don’t know…I’m just not digging them.

What do you think?

  1. I know what you mean. If I had never heard of an iPhone, these adds certainly wouldn’t inspire me to look into it. The “mankind” one especially; he just kinda rambles, doesn’t he?

  2. They certainly don’t have the originality or timing of classic Apple advertising. It may be that they wanted ad lib spontaneity as a way of impressing the viewer these are just ordinary folk taken off the street. The problem is that this really isn’t necessary. Viewers expect a certain amount of polish and airbrushing, if you will. When I was in advertising, we would spray fruit to be photographed with glycerine because it lasted longer that water droplets. It gave a nice polish, something these commercials appear to be lacking.

  3. Yea I really don’t like the new ads, they don’t seem very coherent, I’d much rather some well scripted ones, but I really like how these ads end, making it seem like they were just stopped on the street.

  4. Drop the friggin’ iPhone crap already and get to work on Leopard, Apple. Were into October and we haven’t seen a single RC yet. WTF?

How many Mac users have OS X? And how many own iPhones? Exactly…
