Due to the onslaught of the pandemic this year, a lot of companies had to resort to working from home. This was an imperative move to continue their operations whilst keeping their employees safe. The same can be said to schools and universities that have continued to launch learning programs online. One of the most popular applications being used to facilitate this move is Zoom. It is basically a video-conferencing platform that connects people from all over the world.

If you’re using a laptop or worse – a phone – to use Zoom, you may sometimes find yourself squinting just to properly see the people you’re video-chatting with. With such a small screen, everything looks minuscule. This is where Apple TV comes into play. If you happen to have one at home, use it to your advantage and have meetings on Zoom using your Apple TV.

Using Zoom on Apple TV

Setting Up Your Device in Front of the Apple TV

One of the first things to do in order to be able to use Zoom on your Apple TV is to set up your device – may it be your iPhone, iPad, or Mac – in front of the TV. If you’re using any of these devices, chances are you’re also using their built-in webcam for your Zoom video conferences. Setting your device in front of your Apple TV allows you to still look mostly at the direction of the webcam even though your video is on the TV.

You can use any flexible tripod to set up your device in front of the TV set. Small tripods or stands for most Apple devices can be easily found and bought from Amazon and any other online stores. If you’re using your Mac, just set up a small table to use as its mount. A few books can also be an alternative. Simply adjust the lid of your Mac to get a better angle of the camera.

So how do you connect your device to your Apple TV? It’s simple – you can do it via AirPlay.

For Mac users, here are the steps on connecting your device to your Apple TV via AirPlay:

  1. Go to the Displays preference pane.
  2. From there, you will see the AirPlay Display menu and choose your Apple TV.
  3. After this, you should also enable the option for “Show mirroring option in the menu bar when available.” This allows you to access the AirPlay menu much faster.
  4. When you’re done using your Apple TV, simply go back to the preference pane or the system menu bar and turn off the option for AirPlay Display.

On the other hand, if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad to connect to your Apple TV via AirPlay, this is what you should do:

  1. Swipe up the screen for iPhones that still have the Home button. If you’re using an iPhone with Face ID or an iPad, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen.
  2. When the Control Center screen shows up, select “Screen Mirroring.”
  3. Choose your Apple TV to establish the connection.
  4. Once you’re done using Zoom on your Apple TV, simply go back to the Control Center and select “Stop Mirroring.”

Do take note that when you connect via AirPlay, the audio capability is automatically passed to your Apple TV. If you’re using an iPhone or an iPad, it isn’t possible to separate the audio output control. This might be an issue depending on the location of your speakers and your mic. On the other hand, if you’re using a Mac, you can select the audio output by going to the Sound preference pane.

Video Streaming Zoom on Apple TV through HDMI Connection

Another way to connect your device to your Apple TV is by connecting both via HDMI. For Mac users, there are a lot of adapters that you can use to connect your Mac to your Apple TV. An example of this would be a USB-C to HDMI adapter. These adapters are easily available in stores and online. You can also select your audio output by going to the Sounds preference pane.

However, you’re using an iPhone or an iPad, you first have to obtain a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter. Apple has a version of this that you can purchase called the Lightning Digital AV Adapter. After connecting your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV, you can start using Zoom and have online meetings with your colleagues.

Just follow any of these methods so you can use Zoom on your Apple TV. Not only will this device make your screen so much bigger, but it will also enable you to simultaneously complete other tasks without having to balance your phone or your laptop. It’s great seeing your friends and colleagues more clearly while you all cope and study or work from home.
