Last night, I finally got caught up on Lost like I’ve been trying to do for a week now. Again, the quality is great…but I did notice one other little nitpick…I don’t like the way the remote fast forwards. It’s not precise enough for me. I’m sure this is something that can be fixed with software, but I would really like a better fast forward and rewinding capability.
I’ll tell you another thing that I have noticed about using the AppleTV….I don’t watch as much TV.
Don’t get me wrong, I love television, but since I don’t have any channels to flip I’ve found myself working on other projects and *gasp* reading a book from time to time, instead of flipping around for something to have on the tube.
I think this is a good thing, and I’m glad to finally get to reading the other books in the “John Carter of Mars” series I’ve had on my bookshelf (my bookshelf being the floor next to my bed) for over a year.
One other quick note, on this apparently random thoughts of AppleTV edition of the column, has anyone else noticed how hot the AppleTV gets? Geez – this thing is on fire. It is literally hot to the touch. Mexican Food Restaurants don’t serve food on plates this hot (remember, I’m in Texas…we eat a lot of Tex-Mex here). I hope that we don’t start hearing about AppleTV over heating problems anytime soon…but I can’t say that I would be surprised if we do.

John Carter of Mars! I read those 50 years ago in the classic comics. Later when I started tripping on life, I reread the novels, along with Stranger in a Strange Land, and Carlos Castenada books.
Is there even a vent for the heat to escape? I don’t remember seeing one when I looked at the Apple TV. In addition the harddrive is mounted on the top of the device so when you touch it, its as if your touching the harddrive. I agree its stupid but MacBook’s get disturbingly hot aswell. However my iMac doesn’t ever get really hot, lucky me 馃檪
My AppleTV has been on constantly and it gets about as hot as my PowerBook – too hot to press against my crotch, but not hot enough to bother me… especially since it’s sitting on a shelf and I have no need to touch it.
There are apparently video podcasts in the works specifically for AppleTV. Can’t wait. I watch about an hour of AppleTV every night and a few minutes here and there during the day. This is all iTunes content (and a few videos converted with QT/VisualHub). I’m actually not able to catch up to all my video podcasts, so I can afford to be selective about which ones I watch.
Re: heat vents, the bottom has a vent going around the base, but most of the heat is radiated through the top surface. The fact that it gets hot actually means that it’s radiating heat way from the sensitive electronics that could be harmed by the heat.
Put a tray of water on it and 茂拢驴TV will double as a humidifier!
