So, I want to put command-shift-3 on F13 on an apple external keyboard. I have a mackbook pro and it only goes to F12 and they’re all taken up. What’s the best way to do this?

So do I, Michael use Command-Shift-4 man! It gives you an instant crosshair icon you can use to drag over ANYTHING you want to take a screenshot of and it aves it to the desktop instantly! That is so much easier that any widget, please TRY IT! Not Command-Shift-3, that’s for the whole screen, try Command-Shift-4.

Oh to heck with the lot of you! I have to take small pieces of the screen all the time (like when I take captures of icons) and I find this dashboard widget very useful.

I’m jumping in on this. Screenshots on the Mac are one of the selling points I tell people who are thinking about switching…or throw at PC users who try to bash them. Learn a few keys (already mentioned) and you’re set. Gez Michael….

Micheal,

I put Command-Shift-3 on F5. Whenever I want to capture a portion of the screen, I just have to hit that key. A window ? F5-Space. That’s it ! OF course, if you are the mouse type, this widget could prove useful.

BTW, you say that screenshots are not as easy on the Mac. Have you ever tried to capture a portion of the screen or a just a window with Windows? Good luck !

One more screen shot button combo: Command-Shift-4 and then Spacebar to take a shot of a window, drop-down dialog, dock icon, widget, or other screen element!

In response to Michael, why use a widget? I find keystrokes faster than using dashboard. Granted, I’m still running on a Core Solo cpu, but really the only time I might want to use this widget is for the flexibility of file formats. Personally I have nothing against png, and if someone does, there are apps that will let you change that default for the key combos.

Fellas…yeah, you can hit Command Shift 3, and that’s great…and you can open a program like Seashore and manipulate it…but why on Earth would you do that if you just want a section of the screen when you can use this FREE widget to do it in a couple of clicks?

Whatever happened to “Command-Shift-3″ …?

Oh, it still works. Outputs a file to the desktop in .png format, and best of all, it’s free! Use a good open source graphics program like Seashore to manipulate it and you’re sorted.

Umm, did you say screenshots on a Mac are not as easy as they should be? You have to be kidding, right? Command, Shift, 3 is too hard to do? Command, Shift, 4 is too difficult for a sizeable screenshot? Come on man, it doesn’t get any easier than that. This widget is MUCH more involved to get a screenshot!
