Mozy, Inc has announced the release of MozyHome for Mac, the industry’s first unlimited online backup service for Mac.

MozyHome for Mac is designed as a consumer service (though a Pro service for businesses is currently in Beta), and offers users 2Gbs of online backup free of charge with no expiration date. All you have to do is download the Mozy software (which you can get here), select the files you want to back up, and you’re done. All files are encrypted with 448-bit Blowfish encryption and the encrypted files are transferred via a 128-bit SSL connection – the same encryption used for online banking – during the backup process for extra security.

After your initial backup, Mozy only backs up incremental changes to files and folders, to speed up future backups. Mozy also keeps 30 days worth of file versions as well. If you have a hard drive failure or lose your data in another manner you can recover your Mozy backup via their client software, on DVDs sent from Mozy, or by downloading them from Mozy’s website.

2 Gbs is not going to be enough for most users, of course, and Mozy does offer an unlimited service for only $4.95 a month per computer. It’s probably the cheapest insurance policy you’ll ever find. You can find more information about Mozy at their official site.

I never like seeing “unlimited” anywhere because there is always people like me who backup close to 1TB of data. Something tells me they wouldn’t like my service. Same reason Bandwagon (iTunes syncing) rejected me. It appears my iTunes library of 300GB was more than they wanted to deal with. Ah well Samsung has that 500GB 2.5″ HDD that should have been shipping in March, shouldn’t be much longer, right? …right? :S

Unlimited number times you can access the system… NOT unlimited amount of storage. Some would call it misleading?

I don’t see anywhere on the site where it says there is a limit on your storage. Please provide a link that can back that up for us. What kind of limits are you saying they impose?

Official word from Mozy: ” You can back up as many files as you can fit on your home computer. Just note that the more files you back up, the longer your initial backup will take. MozyPro even offers the capability of backing up network or mapped drives for more flexibility.”

“You can back up as many files as you can fit on your home computer.”

You didn’t have this in your initial post, and that’s way I thought it was appropriate to leave a comment ;-) I feel the word “unlimited” is used too often as a marketing buzzword. The only thing “unlimited” that we have access to is AIR ;-) , everything else is marketing jargon. Have you seen all those “unlimited” bandwidth advertisings we see at every other hosting provider? ;-) or in your domain of coverage; the initial AT&T’s “unlimited” text messaging for iPhone? ;-)

I really like Mozy and have been using the beta for a while. I’ve been getting by with the free 2 GB on my MacBook just backing up a certain set of items but I signed my girlfriend up for the unlimited service when I switched her from her constantly crashing PC to a Mac Mini. Working well so far.

I’m using MozyHome Unlimited for my MacBook for more than a year, and it works very well, even with about 100Go of data!
