  1. As with every Apple release, I find myself torn between the two.

I want to get Logic Express because I don’t think I’ll have a use for Soundtrack Pro or Main Stage, and I’d save $200 bucks. However, Logic Express doesn’t come with the $500 worth of Apple Jam Packs that are in Logic Studio.

  2. quick price breakdown:

    yesterday:
    Logic Pro 7 – $999
    Soundtrack Pro 2 – $299
Live Performance Software similar to Mainstage – $299 or more
Jam Packs – $99 each. and totally worth it, too.

    yesterday’s total = $1993

    today:
Logic Studio – $499 comes with everything listed above

    today’s total = $499.
    um…saving about $1500?
    yes. yes, indeed.

there’s quite a bit of difference between logic express and logic pro besides the new studio bundle:

    1) logic pro features some of the most powerful virtual instrument plug-ins ever. things like sculpture, exs24, and ultrabeat. sculpture isn’t available with logic express. the exs24 sampler is only a player in logic pro, not a true sampler. they say ultrabeat will be with logic express now but no word on what functionality it will have – my bet is not full…

    2) logic pro has some of the most amazing effects plug-ins ever. things like space designer – a convolution reverb that truly sets logic pro apart from competitos (cubase, pro tools, abelton, etc. don’t come with convolution reverbs…and they START at about $500)

    3) logic pro’s standard effects plug-ins, not the ones they brag about, are amazingly good quality and indispensable when mixing and mastering. things like the adaptive limiter, reverbs, channel eq’s, etc., even down to something as simple as a chorus plug-in are vastly superior with logic pro.
logic express’ effects plug-ins are decent for the price…but logic pro is worth the money for the effects alone

    4) logic pro allows for more inputs, outputs, surround mixing, and generally more signal flow fluidity than logic express.

    5) the overall sound quality with logic pro is better due to the floating-point 48-bit processing. and i heard logic pro 8 has 64-bit processing. this means even when you’re bouncing down to cd or mp3, mixing and mastering at higher bit depths before bouncing equals better sound. period.

    6) the jam packs DO rock and were worth $99 bucks a pop. not just loops but instruments that open up in exs24, fully tweakable and playable. the steinway grand sample on the orchestral jam pack honestly rivals the $200 and $300 grand piano virtual instruments i have.

    7) there’s a very underappreciated mastering tool in logic pro…waveburner. if you plan on burning cd’s, it’s worth the cost of getting logic pro right there.

there are more reasons but that’s all i’ve got off the top of my head.
