1 Million Safari Downloads in 48 hours…that can’t be a good thing…

safari.jpgApple today issued a press release, very pleased to announce that there have been over 1 million Safari downloads in the first 48 hours of its release.

Of course, from what I’ve tried, and what I’ve read, this beta of Safari isn’t really ready for prime time just yet. Its real world performance doesn’t match what their site claims in regards to the speed of the browser, and they have already had to patch the thing.

I wouldn’t want 1 million people to have copies of that software yet if it was me.

What do you think? Is this a good thing, or a bad thing?

  1. Personally, I think it (1 million downloads) says that Windows users are longing for a new browser..

Does Safari for Windows have auto-update? If so, I would think that those with the unpatched version would be safe.

  2. Come on, this is how Microsoft makes its products. Quit worrying – standard practice on that platform 🙂

  3. @BlogManiac

I know this is how Microsoft does things…but that’s no excuse. 🙂

All I’m saying is that it makes me worry that people will try the Beta, be unhappy with it and then not download the full version that we all know will be substantially better.

  4. I don’t get why you’re so worried about this Safari Beta. It’s a good thing that people are downloading it because it works fine and it’s so much nicer than IE7 and even Firefox.

  5. @ Andrew –

I’m only worried about it because my real world experience with it was terrible. I downloaded it on a Windows machine, I tried it, and it was the worst browser I’ve ever used on Windows that wasn’t made my Microsoft.

  6. I understand what he’s saying, I remember downloading firefox before it was good back in the day. I automatically dismissed it for the next couple of years.

  7. It’s a great thing. Even if it is not the best browser anything that eats away at IE’s hold is a good thing. It gives Firefox a better chance to grow. Also it is a beta I think we all keep forgetting that.

  8. It’s a good thing. okay, it’s flakey in certain areas (especially stability), but speedwise it’s great, also on winXP Pro.
The problem with windoze is that it has so many variations and configurations, so experiences will be very varied.
And with the 3.0.1 update, even paranoid people will start to like it 🙂

  9. Eh, I think that’s a ton of curious developers & mac wannabes. There are plenty of people out there that desperately want a mac, but can’t afford one or work won’t provide them one.

I wouldn’t worry. Users are fickle. Even if they have a bad experience initially, they’ll at least give it another go once it’s ready for primetime.

  10. Hey, if a million users downloaded my product, I’d be happy. And it’s not like Apple isn’t offering support. A patch released that fast? Don’t we cheer on Firefox for that kind of responsiveness?

Diversity is good, it pushes the eco-system to evolve.

  11. my experience has been way less than stellar…

crashes occur when printing is the biggest issue……Apple is getting lots of error sends from my machine!! I have to launch Firefox to print what WON’T print via Safari…..

My suggestion would be that APPLE get busy sending out updates to fix the errors !!!!!!!!!

  12. well since I saw on the wwdc keynote how many people use IE with windows it doesn’t really matter I think! I mean to say that safari 3 beta is quite buggy – but it’s new and I thiink the bugs will be fixed…IE is old and probably the same amount of buggy^^ and just to try I downloaded safari for xp (see, I have win xp, too) but I prefer firefox to IE and safari!

and…I believe the 1million downloads in 48h are winversion downloads as well as macversion! so half might be people with mac os x who wanted to try it – by the way donwload numbers don’t say if the people who downloaded it really use it…

    that’s my point of view!

  13. I was disappointed by Safari Beta and I’m sure those other 999,999 people weren’t too pleased with it as well. The aesthetics were fine, but the speed… I’ve compared my IE7 and Firefox browser’s loading times to this one, and Safari was the slowest… by far.

Then again, when the alpha comes out with new stable new features and such, consumers may become impressed with Safari’s evolution… is that what Steve is striving for?
