We'll see 3G when AT&T expands the network. Right now they are in the process of doing that. Apple has the technology to build it tomorrow, hopefully they'll offer it with 32 or 64 gigs ($599 with a $100 credit after 60 days...). Until the infrastructure is in place, we won't see 3G.

Actually what I'm more interested in what do people really want a 3G phone for? I'm in Canada, I'm proud to say that I use an unlocked iPhone but I never touch wireless internet via Edge because its ridiculously expensive here. I'm in Vancouver, BC and its not THAT hard to find an open access point if you REALLY need one.

Do people want it for video? Just plain faster Internet?

Just in time for the holidays FTW!

I'm somewhat ignorant about this type of thing, but we all know that they had to hold off on releasing the iPhone to get FCC approval. If they're updating it, won't it have to go through FCC approval all over again? If that's the case, and there's a 6-month wait time like iPhone 1.0, it's possible that it may be announced later this month, and be released just in time for the holidays.
