Command-Option and then hold the Eject button for approx. 2 seconds.

I like to pick up my apple remote and hold the play button for a few seconds, it also puts the mac to sleep pretty quick.

Well, I find that the fastest in terms of interaction time with the computer is to push the power off button, followed by typing the ‘S’ key.

And if you want to shut down your computer rather than sleep it, press the power button followed by the return key.
