Apple releases “Snow Leopard” details

Apple today announced that at least some of the rumors started by TUAW are true. The next version of OSX will be called “Snow Leopard”, and it will not showcase any new features.

“We have delivered more than a thousand new features to OS X in just seven years and Snow Leopard lays the foundation for thousands more,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “In our continued effort to deliver the best user experience, we hit the pause button on new features to focus on perfecting the world’s most advanced operating system.”

Snow Leopard will utilize iPhone technology to introduce Quicktime X, and will feature a version of Safari that includes the “fastest implementation of JavaScript ever”.

The biggest part of TUAW’s rumor, however, was that Apple would be ditching PPC support – and there is no indication of that from Apple’s press release. They also do not say anything about it being available in Jan of 2009.

We will have to wait and see if their are more details between now and the release.

  1. Finally they do something that users have been asking for for years, stop with the new features and make it just work.

    I agree.
Personally, I’m hoping for a dock option to show open windows, instead of just open apps – that is the only thing I miss since switching from Windows. But I’m pretty sure it won’t happen… ;(

  3. Mirek2,
Doesnt Leopard already do this? kind of, sort of…. if you minimize the window it places an icon on the right side of the dock. but I do miss that feature of windows also.

  4. The naming of ‘Snow Leopard’ is a very poor marketing move by Apple. It seems to suggest an admission that Leopard isn’t as stable, efficient or secure as it should be.

What’s the marketing slogan? ‘Lets make Leopard work properly’.

  5. So are monkeys fling out of your butt? 😉

Sorry could not help it but I still like your website best

Sort of. But if working with, for example, three documents, one a data spreadsheet, one a list of notes, and one a final draft (I use NeoOffice, so it’s all one app), and need to switch between those constantly, it gets quite uncomfortable…
