VIDEO: The Internet - as imagined by futurists in 1969
Last night saw this video on Digg. That was an Apple commercial about the Internet, and how it was changing the world. All very true (if the Internet hadn’t changed the world, then I certainly wouldn’t be doing this!)
The video above, however, isn’t that video. I found this video looking at the recommendations of the previous video. So what is this video?
This video is a look at the future from 1969 - and it is pretty darn close to accurate. Just take a look at it, and I think you’ll be amazed. Obviously its not 100% accurate, but after seeing it, I really thought you guys would enjoy it.

5 iPhone Games I can’t stop playing
I love the App Store. I love the App Store so much I don’t know what to do with myself. I’ve been very happy to see that a wide variety of software applications are selling in the store, but one of the most popular is and always will be games.
Games are like the gateway drug into the App Store. You start out with a game or two, next thing you know you’re buying a business app, then a productivity app…then you’re buying a virtual koi pond JUST BECAUSE!!!
With that in mind, I’d like to help you take your first steps into an App Store filled world by suggesting 5 games that I just can’t stop playing. Some are free, others are cheap…all are awesome.

5. Moonlight Mahjong - This is, by far, the best Mahjong game on the iPhone (and there are PLENTY of them). This game is not only a great Mahjong title, with numerous boards to keep play interesting, its also a fantastic demo for just what multi-touch can do.
Moonlight Mahjong shows us the potential that the iPhone has for truly innovative gaming. You can get the free “lite” version here, but if you like it, I encourage you to buy the full version to support his developer.

VIDEO New ‘Get a Mac’ Ads - Pizza Box, Throne, and Calming Teas now online
Apple has posted the latest round of “Get a Mac” Ads and I have to say, all three of them are pretty great. Normally I’d pop in here with a comment about how I’d rather them tell us what a Mac can do than what Vista can’t do - I just can’t help it this time. All three of these are well done, funny, and provide a much needed shot in the arm to this ad campaign.
It’s hard to believe these ads have been running since 2006. The last few batches have left me hoping to see something better…and this batch delivers it in spades.
In Pizza Box PC is hiding inside a box of pizza to try and attract college kids, in Throne PC is tooting his own horn until Mac points out that an Apple Genius will gladly switch over all your files from your PC to your new Mac for free at an Apple Store, and finally Calming Teas shows us the new line of relaxing teas that PC has created to ward off “Vista Anxiety”.
All in all, a great “Get a Mac” update. You can check them all out on Apple’s site right here.
Apple releases iPhone 2.0.2 update, offer (another) MobileMe extention

Yesterday afternoon Apple released another iPhone update. This one, update 2.0.2. At the time of this writing its not exactly clear what the update does, but one hopes that it will help the 3G reception problems that have been bugging so many users. It’s not something that I’ve had a problem with, but I know others who can barely make a call with the 3G turned on. With any luck, this will fix the problem.
Apple also sent out an email to MobileMe customers yesterday evening thanking them for being patient with the MobileMe launch, and extending everyone’s accounts by 60 days (this is in addition to the original 30 day extension). The email even refers to the fact that the launch of MobileMe hasn’t been Apple’s “finest hour” and promises to make it better.
As a MobileMe customer I have to say I appreciate the extension. I’m not sure I would have renewed next month, and now I can give them a little more time to sort everything out.

Apple Fire Damage estimated at $2 Million

According to the Santa Clara County Fire Department the fire at Apple’s Valley Green facility last week resulted in $2 Million in damages. It is still unknown what exactly caused the fire.
Various reports indicate that the fire was burning for more than 3 hours. It was reported at 10:21 pm, and “under control” by 12:30 - so there is a slight discrepancy there, but its possible that the fire was either burning for a while before being reported, or that simply that “under control” doesn’t mean “out”.
The building housed primarily IT workers, and it is not currently known where they will be working while the building is repaired…but I’m sure Apple will figure something out.
Apple spends $450k on lobbying gov. in Q2 2008

MacNN reports this morning that Appl spent $450,000 in the second quarter of this year to lobby within the federal government under a broad spectrum of interests including energy conservation, education, and intellectual property rights.
According to a disclosure form which Apple filed on July 21st (thanks Forbes) the money was divided between patent reforms, consumer product safety, No Child Left Behind, energy efficiency, and programs to stop spyware.
Apple continued to maintain a stance of network neutrality by showing funding divided to the effort. Apple has also lobbied to reform the Universal Service Fund.
iPod Nano owner doesn’t get his exploded iPod replaced…and for good reason

The Consumerist has a very long winded document from an individual who’s first generation iPod Nano exploded.
The piece starts out explaining his situation and then sort of falls off into a ramble about how awful Apple is as a company for not immediately handing him a brand new iPod when brings in an iPod that looks like its been melted.
The only real issue I have with the report on the Consumerist is the fact that this person wouldn’t just leave the device with Apple so they could analyze the issue. Sure, there are reports online of iPods exploding - that doesn’t mean this one did, and there’s nothing wrong with the company wanting to check it out before replacing an out of warranty device sight unseen.
You can read the full diatribe here and judge for yourself.
The impression I get from this is that this person was absolutely convinced that Apple should hand him a new iPod Nano, even though he currently has an out of warranty 1st Generation device. In this person’s mind its not possible that the problem could have been their computer, or a bizarre power surge in their home. That’s not impossible - and Apple should be allowed to take a look at it to see what happened.
So what do you think? Should Apple just take this guy on his word, having no clue who he is or where he came from, and just replace an out of warranty device without so much as having an engineer look at it?
