Wired Predicts “Biggest changes to [computer] interface in 30 years”

core_anim_wide.jpgWired published an interesting article this morning that I think you guys will be interested in taking a look at. The article focuses on the potential Core Animation has to change the look and feel of the Operating System. The article suggests that at the WWDC Keynote Steve Jobs is “likely to give the world a glimpse of an upgraded Mac operating system that could herald the biggest changes to the machine’s interface in 30 years.”

After getting a peek at Delicious Library 2, which hasn’t yet been shown publicly, Mac programmer Scott Stevenson wrote that the program is “going to be a major eye-opener for Mac developers. This last point is important. Whatever you thought was state-of-the-art in Tiger is going to be blown to bits with all of the new API (application programming interface) available in Leopard.”

I think the article is an interesting read that highlights a point about Core Animation that I hadn’t really thought about very much before. One of the examples of an early example of what can be done is the flashy burner Disco – which (I almost hate to admit) has become my burner of choice, based soley on the fact that I’m amused by the smoke that comes off the application as it burns. I know it adds nothing of substance to the application…but dammit…it’s fun.

  1. Damn right, and a new Mac GUI. Goodbye Aqua. Also Apple was trying to find a way to rid of quick changes to the interface ie. Login screen and desktop and sleep mode ect, they wanted to animate all of it, might b another use for core animation.

  2. Everyone already knows OS X is far better than windows and Vista is just a knock-off of Mac features… wouldn’t it be awesome if Apple did something so new and innovative that it would make Microsoft look like they just wasted 5 years of development (even more than they do now). Kinda’ like, “we’re flattered that you tried to copy our stuff, but thats not good enough for us anymore, you can have it, we’ve got something better.”

    I’m up for a revolution.

  3. giving an advanced “tool” for making 3d GUIs is a great way to boost creativity among many developers… it’s a smart move by Cupertino 🙂
