OS X QuickTip: Faster Full Name Viewing

If you’re like me, when you use the Finder, you use it in list view.  It’s essentially the only view I can tolerate, but there is one problem with it that I run into constantly.

Most of the time the names of documents are two long to be viewed completely. That’s not a big deal with some documents, but if you’ve got a dozen documents that begin with the words “Apple Gazette Daily” followed by a number, it can be hard to find the file you’re looking for.

One solution to this problem is to just hold the cursor over the file.  After a few seconds the full name will appear…but those seconds add up quick!

So today’s quick tip is really simple.  If you’re in list view in Finder, and you want to see the full names of your files come up instantly, all you have to do is hold the Option key as you hover over the file names.  The full names will instantly pop up!

  1. Nice one Michael! This issue also annoys me, but no longer!

Also, please don’t think I have forgotten the audio submission – just been really busy as of late. I will try and get it to you for around 8pm GMT tonight.

    Thanks!

  2. Alternatively you can double click on the two little bars below the scroll-bar (the ones you usually drag) to automatically resize the column to fit the longest file name.
