[...] Hoaxes spreading with little (or no) fact-checking My personal issue with blogs is that too many people quickly duplicate what some other blogger has said without doing any fact-checking. A recent case was the spread-like-wildfire claim of ‘Muslim community offended by Apple NYC cube’. It even made the NY Post. Only later did the truth come out - it was just one person on a messageboard. Of course, reading the trail of this story leads back into point #1 - a brief headline was twisted to get more hits (and boy did they get a lot of hits from that story). [...]

[...] And this is not only limited to Christians. I do agree with one commenter on Yugatech that if it were Muslims that bryanboy insulted, the reaction could have been far greater. Remember the Apple NYC Cube fiasco I wrote about on Apple Gazette a while back? Propagandists were successful at inciting religious hatred by pitting religion against religion (well, almost, since love for Apple is considered a religion by some). We were able to dig deeper into the matter, and discovered that the “news” sites involved were of questionable intent. [...]

MEMRI is a right wing Israeli propaganda group ran by a terrorist named Yigal Carmon. It deblieretly mistranslates portions of the arabic press to mislead unsuspecting westerners.
This was nothing but an attempt to manufacture a response. Jewish fanatics be warned!

This is not about extremisim, its about respect that we share among each other. For Muslims the religion and their faith is their greatest strength. Its not about something that look cubical is offending material for muslims. We all know there are lot of cubical shapes out there but the strong point is resembling the holy places is not a good practice, even Muslim scholars discourage the idea of having models of Mecca in your home. Its more like making public toilets in the shape of Vetican. I hope you all can understand.

"an oft-criticized group that supposedly translates Arabic media into english."

It's not "supposedly." MEMRI has been translating Arab media into English for at least 10 years. They are known all over the world. No one has faulted their translations. At the most people have claimed they only translate extremist op-eds, films and such from the Arab world, not moderate - which is demonstrably not true if you look at their website for 5 minutes.

I am a devote Muslim and I love Mac. I am not offended by any such stuff. Even if they make a replica of Kabba it would be pleasant to see one.

Thank you for reporting the truth, even the NYPost bought this lie.

Fantastic!! Thank you for this!!

I love it when someone gives them a dose of their own medecine.

BTW I heard a christian say that the bite out of the Apple logo reminded them of original sin and therefore all true christians should boycott Apple. Can I get my sensationalist story on Fox News now?

Sincerely,
A Real Live Muslim from Canada.

MEMRI as far as I know is an Israeli propaganda outfit. Usually their translations are said to be accurate but what they chose to translate reflects a certain bias.

read juan cole's blog for some history on MEMRI. they're just a propaganda outfit. their translations are usually - yes, usually - fraudulent. they just rewrite history and don't worry that others will find their mistakes and correct them. they don't care. their job is to get the first big rush of news because this is the way the media works. when the truth is outed later, it'll be a back-pager and the media just won't cover it with the same fervor.

can you say WMD?

What is interesting about this is the Macintosh platform supported non-roman languages far before the DOS operating system did.

Apple has been more responsive to the needs of the Arab-speaking world, where many Muslims live.
