Money Saving Macs? My How Times Have Changed…

apple-logo.jpgThere is a great article over at Wired about how opinions of Macs have changed in recent years. People used to complain that Macs were too expensive, but as Windows machines become more and more infected with viruses and spyware, Macs suddenly become much more valuable for the price.

Things are changing…and while I don’t forsee a day where Apple takes over the computer industry complete (not yet, anyway), I do think that things are going exceptionally well for the Cupertino based company, with no signs of slow down in site.

Macs, to me, are more than just cool. I love my Mac computers because the darn things just work. I don’t have very much to complain about when it comes to the way my Mac operates, and what it does. When I plug things in 9 times out of 10, they work! Who’d a thunk it? It’s the little things that will help Macs gain more marketshare in the long run. The fact that they can do fun things right out of the box really helps the image, and the fact that they are more secure than their PC counter parts are making them seem like a viable solution for businesses.

It’s a great time to be a Mac fan.

  1. I agree, I was a long time Windows user 10+ years, when the Intel Mac’s came out and all the great reviews I started looking at them more seriously, then after all the constant crap I got from my Windows PC I finally had enough. I love just turning on my Mac everyday, its a joy to use and in over 6 months, I think its crashed once. And after seeing what their next “os” is. Well, I’m glad I made the right choice. Hell Tiger is better than Vista and its what? 2 years old.

  2. I disagree. I think Macs are way overpriced. I grew up on Macs(12+ years) and bought a new workstation every couple of years. I started experimenting with HTPCs and only Windows PCs could do that so I built one. The thought of getting a PC for $500 and being able to get moderately priced upgrades was all I needed. Within a year I had sold all my Macs and now own multiple PCs and I couldn’t be happier. I have saved so much money it’s incredible. If I loose a power supply I just go to Fry’s and get another one, imagine that, being able to fix your computer. I do everything I ever did on a Mac and more. I say more because I work with a variety of video and codecs for HTPC. I am constantly surprised that Mac users don’t demand lower priced hardware. Most Mac fans I know claim that PCs are cheaply made and they are paying for quality but I can assure you they are the same parts. I for one got tired of it a long time ago and voted with my wallet.

First – and this is not a shot at you or sarcasm, I’m seriously curious – what are you doing here? If you’re not a Mac users, why are you visiting an Apple Blog? Did you get a link from somewhere else or do you come here often?

Secondly, I see your point from the perspective of being able to build your own system…but I don’t want to build my own system. I think most Mac users don’t want to build their own systems…or they would be Windows and Linux Users.

I also think you have to factor in the cost of anti-virus and the time it takes to keep that junk up to date and to check your system for problems. I also think all the driver downloads and install times are a factor too. Back when I had a day job, it was on a Windows PC, and I spent a ton of time troubleshooting the printers, and troubleshooting the scanners…scanning for viruses when the machine was acting wonky…my time is more valuable than that. I shouldn’t be spending my time having to do that junk, and on a Mac…I don’t.
