How many times have you been hammering away at the keyboard, trying to get a document out really quickly and not paying much attention, when you accidentally hit the caps lock key? Or maybe you’re typing in a password that’s blurred out and you can’t figure out why it won’t enter into the form correctly. It’s happened to me more times than I care to count, and every time, it pisses me off. Now, there’s a freeware problem that may not solve every accidental caps lock scenario, but it will help in some.
It’s called CapSee, and it’s a very simple little program that sits on your menu bar, doing nothing for most of the day. But when you click on the caps lock key, It pulls up an icon across the screen, just like the one you see here. It’s in the same vein as the eject button for a laptop or even the volume control, so it still has a very OSX vibe to it. There’s nothing else complicated about the program at all. In fact, that’s it. You just install the program and let it work away in the background while you do your business. Then it’s there when you need it, like Superman but without the cape.
Of course, there’s a price to this program. It’s free. That’s right, a whopping price of $0.00. So if you want it, go download it and check it out. It’s pretty cool stuff.

There is a bug with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, where it sometimes fails to light the Caps Lock LED. Also, this is handy on my hackintoshes, as Dell seems to have saved a penny by leaving the Caps Lock indicator out…

Nice idea, but I simply disabled the Caps Lock key in the System Preferences,
Open Keyboard. Click on the Modifier keys button on the lower right.
The top pop-up allows you to select different keyboards, if you use different ones.
The next pop-up lets you disable the Caps lock key.
It’s simple, takes about 30 seconds to do and doesn’t require external applications.
If anyone is interested, I’ve created a CapSee clone because it lacked some features I needed. Most notably, I have added an optional indicator for the current Caps Lock status on the status bar, I have added Sparkle for automatic updates, and I am using Growl (the most important thing for me), which allows me to select any display style I want (including Bezel), and also adds the ability to play a sound with selected notifications.
