There are a lot of Sudoku options for iPhone owners. All of them have a varying level of quality to them, but one of the ones I was looking forward to trying the most was Freeverse’s “Big Bang Sudoku”.
Freeverse originally released this as a web-app before native applications were an option, and my wife was a fan of the web version. The big question for her was, will the native application be good enough to justify paying for it, when the web version she was already used to was free?
The answer is a resounding “yes”.
Big Bang Sudoku has a cosmic feel to it that adds an extra bit of pizazz to the game’s presentation which become immediately obvious when you launch the app. You’re greeted by a slowly moving space back drop, then the opening menu zooms towards you. After you make a selection a sun god character pops up with a snarky one-liner or two (you can turn him off in the preferences if you find him annoying – I didn’t).
You’re then taken to the Sudoku game which is presented much like the desktop version and the previous web version. Everything flows smoothly, and is accompanied by great sound.
The game itself plays just as you would think it should. You can switch between placing numbers temporarily in square you think they might go, to making your permanent decision on where they should be, and you can even turn the option on to alert you when you’ve made an incorrect move.
Sudoku is a fun game that is ideal for the iPhone, and Freeverse’s “Big Bang Sudoku” is the best version I have played on the device yet (and there are MANY to choose from). As a result, I’m proud to say that we’re awarding our very first “Editor’s Choice Award” for an application to “Big Bang Sudoku”.

I have played the web version of this and EA’s SUDOKU and EA’s version beats it hands down.

If you’ve played the web version then you haven’t played the application I’ve reviewed here. They’ve very different…and comparing a web game and a native app isn’t fair…that’s like comparing apples to oranges.
I get what you are saying Michael, and I agree. My opinion is definitely one sided. But I wish you would have reviewed this in relation to the other Sudoku iPhone apps so that you could give us a better idea of why you like the Freeverse version the best. The Freeverse Sudoku app looks so much like their web version; which I wasn’t crazy about in performance, game play, or appearance; that I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the money to try it out. Although I don’t think the EA version is perfect, I am quite happy with it. I prefer it by far to any of the web versions I tried for the iPhone and don’t regret purchasing it. As a matter of fact, the only version of Sudoku that I have played that is anywhere near as good looking or enjoyable as the EA iPhone version is a version of the game that was built for the now defunct Life Magazine at life.com by Fantasy Interactive, Inc. It can still be played on Roadrunner’s site at https://www.rr.com/flash/index.cfm?startView=SUDOKURR. I would love to see a more thorough comparison of several of the Sudoku iPhone apps.
