Apple Introduces New 27-inch LED Cinema Display

The Apple display lineup has been pretty lacking the last few years. There’s the ridiculously expensive 30-inch flat panel, clocking in at $1799, and then the 24-inch LED Cinema Display, which is great, but doesn’t match either of the iMacs that it would otherwise complement nicely. One thing I didn’t realize about the 24-inch model is the included MagSafe connector, making it easy to charge your MacBook without needing to pull your portable MagSafe charger out every time you dock.

But now, the hole has been filled with the new 27-inch LED Cinema Display, which will hit the sales floor in September. It features all of the same goodies as the 24-incher: USB 2.0 hub, MagSafe connector, iSight camera and speakers. Of course, there is the new larger size, which complements the already cool lineup of 27-inch iMacs, making this a very attractive option for designers who prefer multiple computers. Resolution grows to 2560X1440 as well.

Like any Apple display, this one isn’t cheap. $999 gets you this bad boy, which is just $200 from a 21.5-inch iMac. But if you’re a designer who’s anal about their desktop, or just someone who really enjoys Apple products, maybe this is the display for you.

  1. Kevin — this is a very competitively priced display. Like the 27″ iMac, it’s an IPS display. If you look on Dell’s website, a monitor with the same panel will cost you $1099. The Dell has more inputs, but lacks a camera and speakers. If all you want to do is connect up a 27″ display to a machine with a mini-displayport, save the $100 and get a better looking device as well.

Also, if you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the built in MagSafe connector for powering your laptop is a big plus.

I’m seriously contemplating getting one of these to replace my 20″ Dell panel that I have connected to my 27″ iMac. I already know that the screen size is a match, which is big deal when you are trying to use dual monitors. And I’ll finally be able to get rid of the burned in menu bar ghosting as well.

  2. It a real shame they dropped the ball and the stand height on the new Cinema 27″ dosent match the hight on the iMac 27″. so running dual screen leave a half an inch drop down to the Cinema display from the iMac. Really cant belive they didnt put some height adjustment on the Cinema 27″ so that you could line the two up. i gess there will be a lot of people with a book under there Cinema 27″ base. Or perhaps get a block of aliminium made at 11mm to sit it on. 🙁
