There are two programs I know that do exactly what you’re saying. One is Signal and the other is Remote Buddy. Both of them work by WiFi, and you can control your iTunes from anywhere in the world.
And the Remote Buddy doesn’t only work with iTunes but you can control several things of your Mac.
Thy them, they are really cool!

I would imagine the few people that don’t have wi-fi will need to get wi-fi. The vast majority of people have wi-fi these days.
