it works !! i got hold of an old pair of iPhone speakers and now i can speak to my friends at 4 a.m. for no extra cost lying in my bed. it works. they didnt disable the first generation iPhone speakers/ mic. so heck getting an iPod touch is much cheaper and a better option than the iPhone 3G.
