iPod Holiday Sales are through the ROOF!

ipod.jpgAccording to Mac Rumors, Steve Jobs and Co have a lot to be happy about this holiday season (ya know, except for that whole stock thing). Traffic to the iTunes music store was up 413% compared to last Christmas…the spike in traffic is credited to new iPod owners flocking to the iTunes music store to download content.

The spike was so great, that it caused the iTunes store to be slow, and even cause “error” messages on Monday of this week – leaving some users in a huff.

Overall, analists are looking at this as a good thing for Apple, however, since it shows that demand was even greater than what Apple had expected for the product.

The iPod also topped the Amazon best sellers list for MP3 Players, and according to Hitwise, is beat Microsoft’s Zune.net site 30 to 1 in site visits.

  1. When is somebody going to understand that it’s not the iTunes Music Store they talk about.
Yes, of course, traffic was up, but that doesn’t require rocket-science. All those little nice shuffles and nano’s need software to use it! Oh, oops, no CD included anymore, so that’s why we go to http://www.apple.com and download it.
Yup, it is a good sign that so many people want to download iTunes, but it reflects only on the amount of iPods sold, not, as many suggest, the amount of tunes sold….

  2. Luc –

You did read the title, right?

“iPod Holiday Sales are through the ROOF!”

Nothing in the article says anything about the amount of iTunes sold.

  3. Michael,

You are right to say that you could read it different ways, but to me this is very suggestive writing. 413% up yes, but not to due to downloading music-content. You will know as well as I do, that Apple does not give any numbers on how many people and how many songs are downloaded, except for the big-time barriers (1 million, 500 million, etc).

The article (and many other articles on it as well), as I read it, leads you to believe that there where songs downloaded by the gazillion, but fails to mention that all those people with new iPods are downloading iTunes itself.

If I am reading things completely wrong, (I’m Dutch, but reasonably good at understanding and reading English) explain it to me and I stand corrected…
