It depends on how much you do. I know people doing around 1000$ per month, and they update their iPhones, so why wouldn't you? ;)

I'm also looking forward to 2.0 Software and concidering no upgrade to the 3G iPhone. 80% of my web/email needs are done within WiFi access points, and to be honest with you the few times I use Edge it's acceptable for what I need at that given time. I'll most likrly wait, take a look at the app store and determine if any or many apps are going to offer any benifits on a 3G device and make my call then. I still have time to decide...

The $199 cost is well under my $500 "no thought" threshold. I'll be upgrading and I'm considering upgrading to the 16Gb iPhone while I'm at it. I am disappointed that AT&T appears to be gouging us on the new 3G plans though. $10/month extra for 3G and an extra $5/month for texting - that's an extra $15/month x a new 24 month commitment = an extra $360 in AT&T's pocket. So is AT&T paying Apple $360 for the phone, or are we?

I haven't until yet been a proponent of making the iPhone (LEGALLY) opened / unlocked - but I'm starting to think a little competition for AT&T might be a good thing . . .

It all depends on whether O2's "pay as you go" tariff is good value. If it is, then I may be able to persuade my wife to take over my old iPhone and I can upgrade.

Otherwise, I will probably hold off upgrading for a few months. 3G and GPS is nice to have but not absolutely necessary for me at the moment.

As someone who lives in Europe I can say - I'd DEFINITELY UPGRADE (I'll buy my first iPhone soon, but I'm sure I'd upgrade if I had the 1st gen device).

I'm also compelled to have the latest and greatest. The 3G and GPS are enough reason for me to get a new one as soon as it come out, but... we won't have 3G in our market till the end of the year. So for that reason I'll wait a while. The 2.0 software should be enough to hold me over. I hope that if I get software software loaded on my current 1st gen iPhone I'll be able to move it to the 3G without any problems.
